Unfinished Business

Feat. Schubert, Puccini, Mozart, Berg, Berio

Wouldn't it have been wonderful if history's greatest composers could have been gifted with the sixth-sense to tie up all their musical ends before they died?

Not least because composers have a depressing habit of dying whilst working on a masterpiece! Still, as this week's collection shows, these unfinished masterpieces do often surface nevertheless and go on to have public lives, and our five works span the gamut of the shapes these posthumous releases can take. So, for works completed by others to sound as close to the original composer's intensions as possible, we have Mozart's Requiem, Puccini's Turandot, and Berg's Lulu. Then we've used Schubert to tick our other two boxes. So for works performed in their still-uncompleted state, we've chosen his Unfinished Symphony No 8. Then for a work completed non-idiomatically, we've chosen Schubert's even-more-unfinished Ninth Symphony, and specifically Rendering, Luciano Berio's 1990 fashioning of it into a beautiful collision of the nineteenth and twentieth century styles. In other words, he took Schubert's unfinished business and turned it into the sound of Now.
