The Art of String Quartet Vol. 1

feat. Shostakovich, Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy & Mendelssohn

Play all

There is something about the string quartet repertoire that acts almost like a homing beacon to all musicians striving for perfection, and the moment you take a closer look you realise why.

That it's where composers have often been both at their most personal and soul-bearing, and also at their most experimental and innovative. Then there's the sheer amount of it; you'd need three lifetimes at least to explore it all. Plus, in order to then make this music flower you need to be completely artistically in sync with three other people. In other words, it's a true challenge, to the extent that many soloists would say it blows concertos out of the water in terms of job satisfaction, and why so many other artists wouldn't give up their membership of a quartet for a soloist's career. The five quartets we've chosen here firmly make that point, too: Shostakovich's anguished “Dresden” Quartet No 8, Mozart's “Hunt” Quartet No 17 written as a homage to his older friend Haydn, and three other quartets which all broke the mould in their own individual ways: Beethoven's Quartet No 14, Debussy's String Quartet and Mendelssohn's A minor Quartet. We hope you enjoy!
