feat. Copland, Beethoven, Suk, Schubert & Schumann
“Spring is the time of plans and projects”.
So wrote Leo Tolstoy in Anna Karenina; and how right he was, given the quantity of music that's been written in this particular season's honour. Much of this music was written during the nineteenth century when artists of all disciplines were being fired up by the Romanticism movement, with its fascination over nature's effect on the lone artist.
So whilst Spring Fever begins with Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the San Francisco Symphony in Copland's 1941 ballet, Appalachian Spring, we then whoosh right back to the start of the nineteenth century – 1801 in fact – for Beethoven's “Spring” Violin Sonata No 5 from Renaud Capuçon and Frank Braley.
More chamber music follows. First, Josef Suk's Spring piano cycle from Margaret Fingerhut, then Schubert's Lied “Frühlingsglaube” sung by Ian Bostridge. We then close with Schumann's Spring Symphony No 1 from the Staatskapelle Dresden under Wolfgang Sawallisch.
