feat. Bach, David Matthews, Telemann, Ligeti & Ravel
This week on Grammofy we're putting keyboard and ensemble works to one side and instead celebrating the immense harmonic and melodic riches that composers have managed to spin when writing for one single melody-carrying instrument.
We start with Bach's Solo Violin Partita in D minor: the work which of course ends with that mighty final Chaconne; and it's played for us by Isabelle Faust. From there we jump to the present day for David Matthews' 2014 work for solo cello, Ein Celloleben, and that's performed here by the British cellist who commissioned it, Guy Johnston. Then it's back to Baroque for Telemann's Solo Recorder Fantasia No 9, played by Dorothee Oberlinger; after which we hop forwards again, this time to Tabea Zimmermann playing the Solo Viola Sonata Ligeti wrote for her in 1994. Then to finish, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon with Ravel's Sonata for Violin and Cello: technically a bit of a cheat given that it's two melody instruments, but you'll hear how interestingly it fits and contrasts with everything else.
So, on the one hand this sees Grammofy doing something a bit different, only giving you one genre from start to finish. However what's struck us as we've listened to the finished result is that although some works do have the especially intimate feel you might expect from solo forces, the overall impression you're left with at the end is not of music drawing you in towards the privacy of a closed room, but music leaping out to come and meet you.
