Fascinating Rhythm

feat. Brahms, Monteverdi, Beethoven, Byrd & Ravel

Play all

All music is in essence a combination of melody and rhythm, but some musical works are more rhythmically intriguing than others, and it's a selection of these fascinating rhythms we're celebrating with the five works of this Collection.

First, Brahms's churning Symphony No 4, heard here with Sir John Eliot Gardiner and his Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. Next Monteverdi's swinging madrigal “Ohimè ch'io cado”, and we've chosen the recording from star French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky with Christina Pluhar and L'Arpeggiata which takes its jazz inclinations all the way. Then comes the Alban Berg Quartett playing the sixth of Beethoven's Opus 18 string quartets, with its skittishly syncopated Scherzo. After all that unpredictability we give you the hypnotic chiming of William Byrd's short harpsichord piece, “The Bells”. Then we finish with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Rotterdam Philharmonic darkly twirling their way through Ravel's almost-ballet, La Valse.
