Introducing Sergei Prokofiev

Feat. The Master Himself

Play all

There can scarcely be anyone who has not heard some of Prokofiev’s music, or is at least familiar with its style, even if they couldn’t name the composer.

His music has been a crucial influence on such film composers as John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith, while many of his melodies have become familiar through being borrowed or sampled in several popular songs, most recently in Robbie Williams’s “Party Like a Russian”! Yet there is a great deal more to Prokofiev’s music than instantly effective melodies. Here in this Collection is a fair representation of his range: the virtuosic, but above all prankish and colourful Piano Concerto No. 3, which Prokofiev himself performed widely, demonstrates his scintillating abilities both as a pianist and composer; equally brilliant, though striking even deeper emotionally, is his Second String Quartet, both an exhilarating and haunting work. We also include music in which Prokofiev celebrated his Russian heritage: the heroic Fifth Symphony, written while the Soviet army was driving the German invaders out of Russia, and his rousing cantata based on his successful film score ‘Alexander Nevsky’. Yet even in those apparently grandiose works Prokofiev’s irrepressible sense of mischief deflates any hint of pompous self-importance!
