Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the LSO bring Mendelssohn to Grammofy

Play all

Felix Mendelssohn was born in 1809 and died in 1847, meaning that he had a mere thirty-eight years on this earth.

His legacy, however, was immense. . Firstly in terms of his actual compositions: masterpieces such as his Octet, the Violin Concerto, five full-scale symphonies and a clutch of evocative overtures including the “Hebrides”. Then, there was his work as a conductor; these days it's hard to imagine a musical world without JS Bach, but it was Mendelssohn who kickstarted the Bach revival when he was just twenty, conducting a Berlin performance of the St Matthew Passion. At the age of twenty six he became Chief Conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and in 1843, still only thirty four years old, he founded the Leipzig Conservatory. Add to all this his talents as a pianist – he gave his first public recital aged nine – and you realise that Robert Schumann wasn't exaggerating when he described Mendelssohn as the “Mozart of the Nineteenth Century”.

We at Grammofy are thrilled to be presenting this Mendelssohn Collection in partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir John Eliot Gardiner. They're continuing their Mendelssohn Cycle this autumn, with concerts at London's Barbican, in Germany and in America, and with the completion of their series of Mendelssohn recordings for the LSO Live label, and it's some of these we're presenting to you here. They are really wonderful recordings. So, enjoy!
