Homecomings

feat. Dvořák, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Mendelssohn & Busoni

Play all

There are all sorts of different ways in which to return home, and we've tried to take this week's title from as many different angles as possible.

We begin with Johannes Moser as soloist in Dvořák's Cello Concerto, composed just before returning home from his three-year stint in New York. Next up is Sir Simon Rattle conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances of 1941, which was his final work, and one over which you hear him looking back over his life's musical highs and lows. Ravel's Piano concerto for the Left Hand meanwhile was commissioned by pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who was determined to resume his career as a concert pianist despite losing his right arm during World War One. It's Andrei Gavrilov who performs on the recording here, with the Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra. Riccardo Muti then takes up the baton, with the New Philharmonia Orchestra, for the next work which is Mendelssohn's “Scottish” Symphony No. 3: a work not completed until a decade after the Scottish walking holiday that inspired it, but sounding no less Scottish for the passing of years. Then finally Davide Bandieri playing Busoni's Elegia for clarinet, a late-life work written just four years before his death for the instrument he'd known all his life instrument through his clarinetist father. So, we begin with a geographical homecoming and end with a life-cycle one. Which we rather like.
