Introducing Johannes Brahms

feat. the Master himself

Play all

Today we're going to introduce you to Johannes Brahms.

Specifically Brahms the symphonic composer, because although he only composed four symphonies – which is comparatively few by nineteenth century standards – each one is a glorious work of pure genius. It's music that on the one hand was utterly of its time in terms of its romantic thought and often opulent orchestration, but on the other hand was music that, in its intricately crafted musical structures, exuded understanding and love of the past masters of the Classical and Baroque eras; Brahms was a dab hand at writing fugues for instance, which were JS Bach's forte. For this collection we haven't just stuck to the symphonies, though. We've also got his German Requiem for you, plus his Hungarian Dances and his Piano Quartet, and with that quartet we've included the arrangement Arnold Schönberg made of it for orchestra. So it's something of a bumper week of musical hours, which feels right for a composer whom we at Grammofy adore so much.
