feat. Duruflé, J.C.Bach, Mozart, Hasse & Fauré
The human voice is a powerful thing; as are music and religious belief. So put the three together and it's a recipe for some of the most emotion-drenched music in the entire classical canon.
That's what we're celebrating here on Angel Voices. The collection is bookended with two masterpieces of the French choral tradition which both draw on ancient Gregorian chant: the requiems written by Maurice Duruflé and Gabriel Fauré. At the centre we've got Mozart's sublime “Et incarnatus est” sung here by the equally sublime Sabine Devieilhe. Then the works sitting either side of the Mozart are two slightly lesser-known Baroque sacred arias by Johann Christoph Bach and Johann Adolf Hasse. The other thing to say about this collection is that we've gone large on countertenors, to the extent that not only are those two Baroque arias are sung by two of today's star countertenors – Philippe Jaroussky and Jakub Józef Orlinski – but we've also chosen the Fauré Requiem recording that casts a countertenor in the Pie Jesu usually given to a female soprano - Philippe Jaroussky again, and if you haven't heard this recording before and the concept sounds a bit strange, then you'll want to know that that's exactly what we thought when it first came out in 2011, and then we heard it and fell in love. So we hope you do too!
