Introducing the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain

feat. Strauss & Holst

Play all

This collection celebrates the highly acclaimed National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

The all-teenage symphonic ensemble of 164 musicians from every background and part of the UK meets – just as they did when they were founded in 1948 - three times a year to rehearse then perform. NYO recruits young musicians who have already achieved the very highest degree of technical facility on their instruments, and their past alumni are a starry bunch including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Mark Elder, Alison Balsom and Thomas Adès. Last summer, the orchestra recorded Strauss’s ‘Also sprach Zarathustra’ and Holst’s ‘The Planets’ with Edward Gardner on the Chandos label, and it's these two recordings you can hear here, presented by NYO members Lucy Dundas and Leo Appel.
