Out Of This World

feat. Vaughan Williams, Webern, von Bingen, Bruckner & Ligeti

Vaughan Williams composed ‘Toward the Unknown Region’ less than a decade after Queen Victoria’s death.

Though its musical style was very much that of his teacher Charles Hubert Parry, it encourages its listeners to dare to venture into the unknown – a stirring, forward-looking message for the first decade of the 20th century. The new century indeed proved one of the most disconcerting and innovative in the history of Western civilisation, both in terms of discoveries of new concepts in communication, creativity and even destruction, but also in various attempts to improve the general lot of mankind – often with disastrous results. Yet a great deal was also anticipated in past ages, and this week we introduce two visionary composers new to these Collections: Anton Bruckner, whose Ninth Symphony was written almost exactly a decade before Vaughan Williams completed his first choral masterpiece; and, from the dawn of Western music, a chant by Hildegard of Bingen.
